What is Entrepreneurship and what does an Entrepreneur do?
Entrepreneurs identify novel value propositions and design a product or service to deliver this value to their customers. To turn their vision into reality, they need to set up a legal entity and spearhead the business process, manage risk and see an idea through to fulfilment. It’s necessary for entrepreneurs to see the big picture but should also be able to roll up their sleeves and get their hands dirty.
Additionally, entrepreneurs must have a solid analytical mindset and be able to identify developing trends while predicting future needs. By employing this combination of intuition, analysis and initiative, entrepreneurs can successfully bring innovative products or services to the market.
Many entrepreneurs will fail, despite the very best of intentions: it’s just the mathematical reality. Even seasoned entrepreneurs who have successfully founded companies will naturally collect a number of failures along the way. These failures are essential learning opportunities to help guide future action. Just like the saying, “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger”, each lesson learned prepares the entrepreneur to face and overcome the same challenge next time.
While they are different, entrepreneurship shares many essential characteristics with project management, for example, the ability to assess risks, put out fires and keep the process on track. Thinking of the business as a whole, especially in its early stage, as one single project, requires the ability to manage stakeholder expectations while ensuring transparency and excellent communication.
Are more entrepreneurs needed?
Society is at a tipping point and facing several existential crises simultaneously. Where a crisis exists, the opportunity for innovation lies not far away. Whether you are passionate about numbers, design, construction, child-care, education or the environment, as an entrepreneur, you can identify a need, test your theory and bring it to market. There is arguably nothing more satisfying than seeing your business come to fruition and succeed, knowing that you are a key reason behind its success.
Denmark is a country that ranks high on entrepreneurship rankings. Danish legislation means that Denmark ranks 6th for the affordability of starting a business in Europe (Businessfinancing.co.uk, June 2021). All of this contributes to making Denmark a relatively easy place to start your own business.
Do entrepreneurial skills only benefit people who want to start a new business? Of course not! It is really practical to understand the entrepreneurial mindset because of the insights it can provide. The ability to think creatively, or employ the design thinking process to develop good ideas (and quickly kill off bad ideas) is hugely beneficial regardless of your position in an organisation.
