The urban beekeeping project
Urban beekeeping is a type of beekeeping practised in urban areas. It is done for different reasons: from bee conservation to food and environmental education. It is also an excellent tool for controlling air quality and the impact of pesticides.
In fact, cities have become a protected place for bees, as they are far from the pesticides and fertilisers used in the fields. Two beehives equipped with IoT sensors have been installed on the terrace of Talent Garden Calabiana to show how it is possible to bring people and nature together in urban spaces through the use of technology.

Why are bees important?
Around 80% of all flowering plants, including most of the crops we eat, are pollinated by insects. Vegetables such as broccoli, asparagus and cucumbers depend on bee pollination, as do apricots, strawberries, apples, tomatoes and many others. Wild bees are among the most important pollinators because they are able to pollinate on a very large scale.
Reasons for the decline in bee populations include the massive use of pesticides, loss of natural habitats, disease and climate change.

What can you do?
There are many things we can all do to help protect bees, from planting flowers on our patio, building bee hotels, or supporting farms that do not use pesticides that harm bees and other pollinating insects, to buying local and seasonal food.
