Diversity and inclusion: a key role in innovation
In December 2002, the UN General Assembly declared May 21 to be the World Day for Cultural Diversity.
As the first article of the Universal Declaration on Cultural Diversity states:
“Culture takes diverse forms across time and space. This diversity is embodied in the uniqueness and plurality of the identities of the groups and societies making up humankind. As a source of exchange, innovation and creativity, cultural diversity is as necessary for humankind as biodiversity is for nature. In this sense, it is the common heritage of humanity and should be recognized and affirmed for the benefit of present and future generations.”
Workplace diversity is a major concern for employers these days.
The workplace is becoming more diverse as it’s become more global, with new cultures that have the right talent for organizational growth. A diverse workforce comprised of people from a wide array of cultures, viewpoints and backgrounds is not just a nice to have. It’s essential. 57% of employees think their companies should be more diverse.
A research from McKinsey and Company titled “Diversity Matters” found out that gender diverse companies are 15% more likely to have financial returns that were above their national industry median, while for ethnically diverse companies this percentage increases to 35%
Promoting diversity within the workplace is one of the best ways to foster an open-minded, global company culture. Not only does this make good business sense—helping your company to better understand colleagues, clients, and customers around the world—it also makes the workplace a more interesting and personally enriching environment for everyone. When people with different skill sets, backgrounds, and experiences are brought together, this fosters more creativity, innovation and problem-solving in the workplace.
